Bill S-214 receives royal assent

On 27 April 2023, Bill S-214 received royal assent. Canada now officially honours February 21 as International Mother Language Day.

For MLLWS this was not a single vote — it was the result of years of letters, meetings, school partnerships, and community festivals that made the case in public. The law puts a date on the calendar. The work is still to fill that date with classrooms, libraries, and neighbourhoods where every mother language is welcome.
